Hello,

I registered a DynDNS hostname so I can run a VNC Server on my home computer. Everything worked fine on the first try. Then I installed DynDNS Updater but I ran into some problems. First, when I set up my host in "settings -> groups", and click on download, I get error message "DynDNS Updater cannot detect hostname associated to your username. In this case, you need to enter it manually." I doubled checked my username and password for dyndns.com, it's correct.

If I let DynDNS Updater try to do an update, the status bar icon will turn red with a "winsock error". If I look in the log, I see the error "hostname [dyndns.org]: 10060 (connection timed out)". Now here's the thing, I'm currently in China, and I know dyndns.org is blocked in China (but dyndns.com is not), that's why I have a host.dvrdns.org address. However, is the blocking of dyndns.org causing issue with DynDNS Updater? I know to check my IP address, I had to change the default URL from checkip.dyndns.org to whatismyip.org to get it working. Please help.

That sounds like exactly what's happening; it's caused by the DNS blocking. The update servers are at members.dyndns.org.

To work around the Chinese DNS block; add this line to your hosts file: (probably in windows\system32\drivers\etc\)

Code:
63.208.196.96        members.dyndns.org

Thank you! Modifying the host file seems to work so far. I will report back if there are any problems.

I am using a Mac in China and have a similar problem with the Mac updater.

The great firewall of China blocks the checkip service.

Is there anyway around this on a Mac ?

exact same thing; edit your hosts file. I'm not a Mac guy so I don't know off the top of my head, but a google search for how to edit your hosts file should point you in the right direction.

Good thing that I found this post.
For some reason my DNS server cannot resolve
"members.dyndns.org" anymore,
so I got the "winsock error" after dialing.

And "members.dyndns.org" has a new IP too,
it took me a while to figure out the IP above is outdated.

Code:
204.13.248.112      members.dyndns.org

Add this line to your hosts file.

And remember that when the DNS entry changes your updater will suddenly fail.

I'd suggest that you try different DNS servers as a first step (such as those run by OpenDNS) to avoid problems in future.
